A LITTLE BIT OF
OUR HISTORY
ORIGINS OF THE
EL POCICO ESTATE
The history of “El Pocico” dates back about five generations of the Baños family. This family of farmers began living here in the early 1800s when one ancestor worked as an "open door servant" for the Torrecillas estate (located north, following "El Pocico," of which it was part), to avoid military service and not be sent to America by King Fernando VII’s orders, where independence wars were starting.
This good man lived in a cave where the main rural house now stands. When he married and the cave became too small, he began to build part of the current house, which successive generations expanded as needed.
By the late 1970s, El Pocico, already separate from the main estate, became the property of Pilar Martínez Palomo, the great-aunt of the current owner. Descendants of the Baños family stayed as sharecroppers until the late 1990s, after nearly 200 years linked to the estate and the Palomo family. Their departure led to the inevitable wear and tear of the now uninhabited house. However, the spirit and energy of this family remain within its walls and surroundings.
The idea to restore the house came from the romantic and sentimental desire of two people to prevent so many years of history from crumbling and disappearing. Pilar, my great-aunt, and I began dreaming of restoring the house and, why not, the entire estate!
Twelve years later, the dream started to come true thanks to European subsidies granted by the CAMPODER association, financial support from my parents, the emotional support of an excellent family, and good advice from the director of the Torrecillas Estate. And undoubtedly, thanks to “Tía Pili,” who sadly passed away three years ago at 91, but surely from wherever she is, she continues to give her generous spirit and enjoys seeing this dream realized.
